SUMMARY:Speaker Series: "Marine Animal Entanglement Response"
DESCRIPTION:Chatham Marconi Welcomes Ms. Morgan Pirozzi to its Speaker Series\n\nEntanglement in fishing gear is a rising global concern and one of the leading causes of death among several large whale species. These whales can carry gear for weeks if not months before succumbing to injury\, exhaustion\, starvation\, or infection. Since 1984\, the Center for Coastal Studies has freed more than 200 large whales and other marine animals from life threatening entanglements\, using techniques developed by staff in Provincetown\, Mass. Disentanglement events are dynamic\, logistically challenging\, and require teams with specialized skill sets and equipment. Learn about the history of disentanglement\, what a successful response looks like\, and how members of the public can assist rescuers. \n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker\n\nMORGAN PIROZZI graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. in environmental science and studied humpback whale acoustics with Duke University. She first came to the Center for Coastal Studies as an intern with the Right Whale ecology program before staying on with MAER. Previously\, she worked studying the behavior of bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay\, Western Australia and on whale watches in Maine.\n\n\n\nAbout Chatham Marconi Maritime Center\n\nFounded in 2002\, the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to preserve and celebrate the history of Chatham Radio/WCC and 20th Century maritime communication through interpretive museum exhibits\, educational programs and community engagement. The Center comprises the historic Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum\, an Education Center offering in-house education in communications science and technology for grades K - 9\, and the Chatham Marconi TechSmart education outreach initiative designed to bring its proven wireless technology curricula directly to 4th grade children in Cape Cod classrooms. More at: www.ChathamMarconi.org.\n\n\n\nAbout the Chatham Marconi Speaker Series\n\n \n\nPrograms are usually presented on the first Thursday of each month from September through June\, and on alternate Thursday evenings during the Summer. Subjects are drawn from the resources of the Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum\, the Education Center's STEM programs\, or member-suggested topics related to our mission.
