SUMMARY:Speaker Series: The Role of Emergency Communications in the Coast Guard
DESCRIPTION:Chatham Marconi Welcomes Capt. H.F. Baley\, U.S.C.G. (retired) to its Speaker Series\n\nOur speaker will review the history and origins of the U.S. Coast Guard especially as they relate to Massachusetts and Cape Cod\, as well as the history and collection of the Coast Guard Heritage Museum located in the Old U.S. Custom House on Rt. 6A in Barnstable Village.  The program will highlight Coast Guard wireless communication history and today's applications.  Artifacts\, such as a WWII era "portable" emergency radio for life rafts\, will be demonstrated.\nAbout Our Speaker\n\nCaptain H.F. (Buck) Baley\, U.S. Coast Guard (retired) lives on Cape Cod and is a volunteer at the Coast Guard Heritage Museum.  He has served as its vice-president for the past 10 years\, and is a periodic lecturer on a variety of topics related to Coast Guard missions and history. \n\nDuring his 26-year Coast Guard career\, assignments included Deck Watch Officer aboard a Coast Guard Cutter conducting Ocean Station patrols in the North Atlantic\, Coast Guard Liaison to the USAF Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service (ARRS)\, and Coast Guard Liaison to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).   The bulk of his tours\, however\, were as a rescue helicopter pilot and included tours in San Diego\, California\; Kodiak\, Alaska and two tours on Cape Cod.  After retiring from the Coast Guard\, Buck worked as an Information Technology Specialist and Project Manager for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).  He is a 1972 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy.   \n\n_______________________________\n\n\n\nAbout Chatham Marconi Maritime Center\n\n\n\nFounded in 2002\, the Center is a 501(c)(3) organization which preserves the history of Chatham Radio/WCC and celebrates 20th Century maritime communication through interpretive museum exhibits\, educational programs and community engagement.  \n\nThe Center comprises the historic Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum and an Education Center offering STEM education in communications science and technology.  These programs include the Chatham Marconi TechSmart outreach initiative that delivers original wireless technology instruction directly to children in Cape Cod classrooms.
